  • Vaccine 3-Year Protocol

Over-vaccinating our pets can result in un-necessary reactions in the short term and more severe immune reactions later in life.  Recent studies have demonstrated that our “core” veterinary vaccines last for three years in most pets. This statement cannot account for each individual pet or a pet that has an immune disorder.  At Animal Medical Center we have a 3-year vaccine protocol as follows:

    Puppies:

Puppies must have their entire puppy vaccine series beginning at 6-8 weeks, every 3 week Distemper/ Parvo vaccine boosters until they are 16 weeks old. They will receive their Rabies vaccine at 12 weeks of age. We may consider administering the Bordetella (kennel cough) vaccine at 9 and 12 weeks of age depending on your pet’s life-style.

Your puppy must have a Rabies and Distemper/ Parvo combination vaccine booster in 1 year. From that time forward, if they are kept up to date within 60 days, they will have a Rabies vaccine and Distemper/ Parvo combination vaccine good for 3 years. The Bordetella vaccine is ONLY good for 1 year.

    Adult dogs:

If kept current within 60 days, their Rabies and Distemper/ Parvo Combination vaccines will be good for 3 years. The Bordetella vaccine is ONLY good for 1 year.  When bringing records from another facility, if not labeled as a 3-year vaccine, all previous vaccines will be treated as a 1-year. If not kept current, all vaccines will be treated as a 1-year and may need to be repeated in 3 weeks depending on your dog’s vaccine history.

    Kittens:

Kittens must have their entire kitten vaccine series beginning at 6-8 weeks, every 3 week upper respiratory vaccine boosters until they are 16 weeks old. They will receive a Rabies vaccine at 12 weeks of age. They should also receive a Feline Leukemia Vaccine at 9 and 12 weeks.

Your kitten must have a Rabies and upper respiratory combination vaccine booster in 1 year. From that time forward, if they are kept up to date within 60 days, they will have a Rabies vaccine and upper respiratory combination vaccine good for 3 years. The Feline Leukemia Vaccine will be given on an individual life-style basis.

    Adult Cat:

If kept current within 60 days, your cat’s Rabies and upper respiratory combination vaccines will be good for 3 years.  When bringing records from another facility, all previous vaccines will be treated as a 1-year vaccine unless labeled otherwise. If not kept current, all vaccines will be treated as a 1-year and may need to be repeated in 3 weeks depending on your cat’s vaccine history.
